Why Oil Specification Matters
Oil is not oil. A Castrol EDGE 5W-40 and a Shell Helix 5W-40 may look identical, but they're formulated differently and perform differently under the thermal and pressure conditions of each engine platform. When Bentley engineers specified Castrol EDGE 0W-40 LL-01, they ran thousands of hours of testing in the W12 engine to validate that specific oil's viscosity index, detergent package, anti-wear chemistry, and deposit control performance. Using a different 0W-40 from a different manufacturer introduces variables that nobody has tested.
The consequences of using wrong-spec oil include: reduced film strength leading to bearing wear (visible in a subsequent engine teardown), deposit buildup in fuel injectors causing rough idle and misfire codes, oxidation breakdown reducing the oil's protective capability as it ages, and warranty voidance if engine damage occurs and the OEM can prove non-approved oil was used. This is not superstition—it's chemistry and engineering. We stock manufacturer-approved oils for all eight makes we service.
Oil Specification by Make & Engine Type
Bentley: Castrol EDGE 0W-40 LL-01
W12 Engine (Flying Spur, Continental, Mulsanne W12): 6–7 liters of Castrol EDGE 0W-40 LL-01 full synthetic. The LL-01 specification is Bentley's proprietary performance standard. W12 engines run exceptional combustion temperatures and require an oil capable of maintaining viscosity and film strength across a wide thermal range. Service interval is 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.
V8 Engine (Continental V8, Flying Spur V8): 8.5 liters of Castrol EDGE 0W-40 LL-01. Same specification as the W12, with capacity adjusted for the engine size. Service interval is 10,000 miles or 1 year.
Cost at independent shop: $600–800 (parts and labor). Oil service includes a new OEM filter, drain plug gasket replacement, and ODIS-E diagnostic verification of oil pressure and service interval reset.
Rolls-Royce: BMW LL-01 0W-30
N74 V12 Engine (Ghost, Phantom, Wraith, Cullinan, Dawn): 8 liters of BMW LL-01 0W-30 full synthetic. The Rolls-Royce N74 is a naturally-aspirated 6.75-liter V12 that generates exceptional power with minimal turbocharging stress. The 0W-30 specification optimizes fuel economy and engine responsiveness while maintaining protective film strength. Do not substitute 0W-40 or 5W-30—the thicker viscosity will reduce fuel economy and increase cold-start drag.
Cost at independent shop: $600–850 (parts and labor). Service includes OEM filter, drain plug gasket, and BMW JTAG diagnostic verification of oil pressure at idle and under load.
Aston Martin: Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol EDGE 5W-40
V12 Engine (DB9, DBS, Rapide): 9.5 liters of Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol EDGE 5W-40 full synthetic. Aston Martin approves both oils, and both perform well in the V12. The 0W-40 offers slightly better cold-start performance in winter climates, while the 5W-40 provides marginally higher film strength at peak operating temperature. Choose based on your climate. Service interval is 12,000 miles or 1 year.
V8 Turbocharged Engine (Vantage, DBX V8): Same specification as the V12—Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol EDGE 5W-40 at similar capacity. Turbocharger operation does not require thicker oil; the boost cooling systems manage thermal load effectively.
Cost at independent shop: $450–650 (parts and labor). Service includes OEM filter and CCM diagnostic verification of oil pressure and temperature sensors.
Maserati V6 Turbocharged: Selenia 0W-40
Ghibli & Quattroporte V6 (3.0T): 6 liters of Selenia 0W-40 full synthetic. Selenia is an FCA-approved synthetic oil formulated for FCA engines (Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Fiat engineering). The 0W-40 specification balances cold-start performance with film strength under turbocharger boost. Service interval is 12,500 miles or 1 year.
Cost at independent shop: $280–380 (parts and labor). Service includes OEM filter and MultiECUScan verification of oil pressure sensor data. Do not use Castrol or Mobil oils on FCA engines—the detergent packages differ and can cause fuel injector and valve deposit issues.
Maserati V8 Turbocharged: Selenia 0W-40
Quattroporte S & GTS (3.8T V8): 9.5 liters of Selenia 0W-40 full synthetic. Same specification as the V6, with increased capacity for the larger displacement. Turbocharger operation does not change the oil requirement—FCA's turbo engineering assumes LL-01 equivalent synthetic protection.
Cost at independent shop: $400–550 (parts and labor).
Maserati GranTurismo: Castrol TWS 10W-60
F136 4.7L Naturally-Aspirated V8 (GranTurismo, GranTurismo MC): 8.5 liters of Castrol TWS 10W-60 or Selenia 20K 10W-60 full synthetic. This is the thickest oil specification among our European platforms, reflecting the high-revving (7,500 RPM redline) naturally-aspirated V8 engine architecture. The 10W-60 provides robust film strength at sustained high RPM while remaining flowable in cold climates. Using 0W-40 or 5W-40 will starve the engine of protective film at sustained high RPM, increasing bearing wear risk.
Cost at independent shop: $380–550 (parts and labor). Service includes OEM filter and verification of oil pressure under load.
Volvo Drive-E: Castrol Dexos2 0W-20
XC90, S90 (2015+) with 2.0T engine: 6.2 liters of Castrol Dexos2 0W-20 full synthetic. Volvo's Drive-E engines are efficient turbocharged mills designed for fuel economy. The 0W-20 specification is critical—using 5W-30 or 5W-40 thickens the oil unnecessarily, reducing fuel economy and increasing cold-start strain. Dexos2 is a GM/Volvo specification that balances emission control system performance with bearing protection.
Cost at independent shop: $220–320 (parts and labor). Service interval is 10,000 miles or 1 year.
MINI N14: Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL-01
MINI Cooper (F56, F57) with N14 engine: 4.3 liters of Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL-01 full synthetic. The N14 is BMW's modern efficient engine platform, and the LL-01 specification ensures compatibility with MINI's service schedule and emissions systems. Service interval is 15,000 miles or 1 year (some models claim 20,000-mile intervals, but we recommend conservative 15,000-mile service for maximum protection).
Cost at independent shop: $180–280 (parts and labor).
Alfa Romeo 2.0T: FCA 0W-20
Giulia, Stelvio (2017+) with 2.0T engine: 4.5 liters of FCA-approved 0W-20 full synthetic (typically Selenia 0W-20 or equivalent). The 2.0T is an FCA turbocharged engine sensitive to oil quality. The MultiAir solenoid system (which controls variable valve timing) can stick or stutter if oil viscosity is too thick or detergent level is insufficient. Using the wrong oil voids warranty and risks mechanical failure of the MultiAir system.
Cost at independent shop: $200–320 (parts and labor).
Fiat MultiAir: FCA 5W-40
500X with 1.6 MultiAir engine: 3.5 liters of FCA-approved 5W-40 full synthetic. The MultiAir solenoid requires oil with precise detergent and viscosity characteristics. Substituting generic 5W-40 oils risks solenoid stiction and variable valve timing faults. Use Selenia 5W-40 or equivalent FCA-approved oil only.
Cost at independent shop: $160–280 (parts and labor).

What Happens When Wrong Oil is Used
Using incorrect oil specification creates a cascade of problems. A thicker oil (5W-40 in place of 0W-20 on a Volvo) increases cold-start drag on the starter motor and delays oil flow to critical bearing surfaces. A thinner oil (0W-40 in place of 10W-60 on a GranTurismo V8) cannot maintain protective film strength at peak RPM, increasing bearing clearances and accelerating wear. Non-FCA oils on Maserati turbo engines can cause fuel injector stiction and variable valve solenoid faults due to different detergent chemistry. Generic 5W-40 oils on Rolls-Royce or Bentley platforms lack the LL-01 additive package, reducing anti-wear protection and increasing deposit accumulation.
The cost of getting oil wrong—engine bearing wear, solenoid failure, fuel injector stiction—ranges from $2,000 to $12,000 in repairs, and the OEM will scrutinize service records if warranty claims are filed. It's far cheaper and smarter to use the correct oil specification from the start.
Why We Stock Manufacturer-Approved Oils
We maintain an inventory of Castrol EDGE, BMW LL-01, Selenia, Mobil 1, Castrol TWS, and FCA oils because getting the oil right is non-negotiable. We don't substitute, we don't approximate, and we don't guess. When you schedule an oil service with us, we verify the oil specification using VIN decoding and factory service bulletins, then use the OEM-approved product. That precision is what separates us from generic shops that pour whatever 5W-40 is on the shelf.
